Stainless steel relies on the passivation film of chromium on the surface to prevent corrosion; Chloride ions can penetrate the passivation film, preventing widespread uniform rusting and making it more prone to pitting and crevice corrosion. Under high temperature and tensile stress conditions, austenitic steel may also experience stress corrosion cracking.
1. 304 stainless steel coil: weak resistance to chloride ions, only suitable for low chloride ion room temperature fresh water; When chloride ions reach several hundred ppm, temperature rises, and the medium stagnates, pitting corrosion is highly likely to occur, making it unsuitable for coastal and saltwater conditions, PREN≈18。
2. 316L stainless steel coil: containing molybdenum, with better resistance to chloride ions than 304, PREN≈24~26; Suitable for moderate chloride ion environments, available at thousands of ppm at room temperature; When the temperature is above 60 ℃, the concentration of chloride ions is high, and there are gaps/deposited scale layers, pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking still occur.
3. 2205 duplex stainless steel coil: PREN ≈ 35-37, with stronger resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, and significantly better resistance to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking than ordinary austenite. It is suitable for high chloride ion and high temperature working conditions (seawater, brine).
Key influencing factors
The higher the concentration of chloride ions, the greater the risk of corrosion; An increase in temperature will significantly accelerate corrosion;
Static media, gaps, surface dirt, scratches, and iron ion contamination can significantly reduce corrosion resistance;
Cold processing residual stress and welding residual stress can increase the risk of chloride ion stress cracking in austenitic stainless steel;
Surface condition: 2B. Pickled passivation surface is superior to rough surface, and the higher the roughness, the easier it is to accumulate chlorine and induce pitting corrosion.
