Why can't stainless steel coils be directly mixed with carbon steel materials when stored

Fundamental problem: Iron ion pollution (free iron pollution) causes induced corrosion on the surface of stainless steel, rather than the corrosion resistance failure of the stainless steel material itself.
1. Migration of iron ions, resulting in rust spots (most importantly)
The surface of carbon steel (ordinary iron plate, angle steel, section steel) has rust, oxide scale, and iron filings.
When directly stacked, in contact, or rubbed, tiny iron particles will transfer and adhere to the surface of stainless steel;
In humid, condensation, rainy, and maritime environments, these free iron particles preferentially undergo electrochemical corrosion, resulting in the formation of red rust;
Rust spots are rooted on the surface of stainless steel, appearing as if the stainless steel is "rusting"; Even 304 and 316L can show this rust stain.
This type of rust belongs to foreign pollution rust, not corrosion of the stainless steel body, but it can damage the surface appearance and further induce pitting corrosion in severe cases.
2. Electrochemical potential difference accelerates corrosion
Stainless steel passivation film has a high potential, while carbon steel has a low potential. When the two come into direct contact and there is moisture (condensate, rainwater, moisture) present at the same time, a primary battery electrochemical circuit will be formed:
Carbon steel as an anode accelerates corrosion; At the same time, it will damage the local passivation film of stainless steel, and the damaged area of the passivation film is more prone to pitting corrosion.
3. Physical damage and foreign object embedding
Carbon steel edges, welding slag, and burrs have high hardness, and direct stacking can easily scratch the surface of stainless steel coils (2B/BA/mirror/brushed surfaces cannot be restored once scratched);
Carbon steel oxide scale and welding slag debris fall into the interlayer of the steel coil, are compressed and embedded into the plate surface, and subsequently form point like defects.
4. Correct isolation method for storage
Cannot be directly attached to carbon steel components or carbon steel trays; Use wooden pallets, plastic pads, and rubber pads for isolation;
Separate storage areas and avoid stacking on the same stack; Avoid scattering carbon steel shavings on the ground;
The warehouse is moisture-proof and prevents condensation; If the surface of stainless steel is contaminated with iron filings, it needs to be cleaned and passivated in a timely manner.
