What are the key points for selecting stainless steel coils

source:www.cnlichao.net  |  Release time:2026年05月07日
The core of selecting stainless steel coils is to first determine the material according to the corrosive environment, then determine the specifications and surface according to the processing/stress, balance the cost and service life, and verify the quality assurance and dimensional accuracy of the steel mill.
1、 Material grade (selected according to environmental corrosion level, most importantly)
Weak corrosion (indoor/atmospheric/clean water): choose 304 (18Cr-8Ni, universal/food grade); Cost sensitive options include 201 (low nickel, moderate corrosion resistance) or 430 (ferrite, magnetic, decorative/home appliance).
Moderate corrosion (coastal/humid/food processing/chloride ion): choose 316L (containing Mo, resistant to seawater/acid and alkali); Select 321 (containing Ti, resistant to intergranular corrosion) for high temperature conditions.
Strong corrosion (chemical/desulfurization/salt spray/acid): Choose 2205/2507 duplex steel (high strength+high corrosion resistance) or 317L/904L (strong acid resistance).
High strength/wear-resistant (tool/spring/heavy load): Choose 301 (cold-rolled high strength) or 410/420 (martensitic, quenched and hardened).
2、 Rolling process and specifications (according to processing method and strength requirements)
1. Cold rolled coil (CR, 0.3-3.0mm, most commonly used)
Features: 2B/BA/HL surface, high precision (IT6-IT8), good smoothness.
Applicable: Home appliances, kitchenware, precision stamping, elevator panels, decorative parts.
      Common thickness: 0.4/0.5/0.8/1.0/1.5/2.0mm; width: 1000/1219/1500mm.
2. Hot rolled coil (HR, 3.0-15mm)
Features: Surface, high strength, low cost.
Applicable: structural components, pressure vessels, thick plate welding, chemical storage tanks.
3、 Surface condition (according to appearance and hygiene requirements)
2B (Cold Rolled Matte): The most versatile, corrosion-resistant, and easy to process, used for kitchenware/home appliances/general decoration.
BA (Bright Mirror Surface): Bright as a mirror, used for decorative/home appliance panels.
HL (brushed): brushed texture, anti fingerprint, used for elevators/curtain walls/decorations.
8K (mirror polishing): High gloss, used for decoration/artwork.
4、 Mechanical performance (according to force and processing requirements)
Ordinary molding (bending/shallow punching): choose 304/316L, elongation ≥ 40%, easy to process.
Deep drawing (complex parts/pots): Choose 304DQ (deep drawing grade), low hardness, high elongation.
High strength (load-bearing/impact resistance): Choose 301 (cold-rolled high-strength) or duplex steel, with a tensile strength of ≥ 800MPa.
High temperature resistance (boiler/heat exchange): Choose 321/309S/310S, stable performance at 800 ℃.
5、 Dimensional accuracy and tolerance (according to machining accuracy requirements)
      Precision stamping/product: thickness tolerance ± 0.03mm, width ± 0.5mm, in compliance with ASTM A480/GB/T 4237.
      General industrial/structural components: thickness tolerance ± 0.1mm, width ± 1mm is sufficient.
6、 Cost and Life Balance (Economic Selection)
Short term/non critical components: Choose 201/430, low price is sufficient.
Medium to long term/key components: Choose 304, with good cost-effectiveness and a lifespan of over 10 years.
High corrosion/high-value equipment: Choose 316L/duplex steel, high one-time investment but maintenance free, with a lifespan of over 20 years.
7、 Quality verification (key points for pit prevention)
Material certification: Request the steel mill quality assurance certificate (MTC), verify the chemical composition (Cr/Ni/Mo), mechanical properties, and furnace batch number.
Surface inspection: no cracks, rust spots, color differences, scratches; There are no burrs on the edges.
Magnetic identification: 304/316L (austenitic) non-magnetic; 430 (ferrite)/420 (martensite) has magnetism (304 may have slight magnetism after cold processing, which is normal).
