Annealing of stainless steel coils is a heat treatment process that generally changes the internal metallographic structure of the material through controlled heating, insulation, and slow cooling, in order to adjust mechanical properties and release residual internal stresses generated during the rolling process. There are corresponding differences in the effects of different annealing process selections on hardness, elongation, and internal stress.
1. Effect on material hardness
Cold rolling processing can cause deformation hardening of stainless steel grains and increase the hardness of the material. After annealing treatment, the deformed grains undergo recovery and recrystallization, and the work hardening effect is eliminated or partially eliminated, resulting in a decrease in material hardness. The annealing and insulation temperature and duration will affect the degree of hardness reduction. By adjusting the annealing process parameters, materials with different hardness levels can be obtained, such as soft state, 1/4H, 1/2H, etc.
When the annealing process parameters are insufficient and recrystallization is incomplete, the reduction in material hardness is limited; If the annealing temperature is too high and the holding time is too long, the grains are prone to grow, and although the hardness continues to decrease, it will have an impact on the surface quality of subsequent forming processes.
2. The effect on elongation
Cold rolled stainless steel has elongated and deformed internal grains, suppressed plasticity, and low elongation index. After annealing and recrystallization, the internal structure transforms into equiaxed grains, the plasticity of the material is improved, and the elongation is significantly increased.
The appropriate annealing process can enable stainless steel coils to have good stretching and deep drawing forming capabilities, suitable for plastic processing procedures such as bending, stretching, and deep drawing. When the annealing process is not properly controlled and the grain size is excessively coarse, although the elongation is still at a high level, the workpiece is prone to orange peel texture after forming, which is not conducive to the production of appearance parts.
3. Effect on internal stress
Cold rolling, slitting, and flattening processes can generate residual internal stresses inside stainless steel coils. Internal stress can cause phenomena such as warping, sickle bending, stamping rebound, and workpiece deformation during subsequent processing or storage.
During the annealing process, atoms undergo diffusion and migration, and the lattice distortion inside the material is gradually alleviated. The residual internal stress caused by rolling is released, reducing the probability of deformation caused by stress release during subsequent processing and use stages. It should be noted that annealing is difficult to completely eliminate all stresses, and the degree of residual stress reduction is related to the annealing temperature and the insulation cooling curve.
